Regular supply of alphonso mangoes from the Konkan region has hit the market from this week with 10,000 to 12,000 crates arriving daily at Vashi's APMC wholesale yard. Supplies from Sindhudurg dominate the market and are hovering in the range of Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000.
Fire broke out at the fruits market in Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Turbhe. Seven fire engines have been sent by Vashi and Koparkhairane fire stations. The fire spread to around 15 to 20 gallas in the market due to flammable items like wooden cartons, papers, dry grass and others.
The price of vegetables is likely to increase in the coming days if the rain fails to subside. The Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) traders claimed that due to the heavy rains, the supply of vegetables has gone down and so has the number of people visiting the market.
Traders at the wholesale grains and spices markets of APMC went on a token one-day strike on Saturday. They were protesting against the recent rationalisation of GST rates and issues thereof including levying of GST on unbranded package food items that were excluded earlier. Several retail shops along with APMCs in the State remained shut on the day.
There are nearly 1,200 traders in the APMC in Mysuru dealing with all agro-commodities. They observed a bandh as part of a nationwide strike called by various trade union bodies. It was a one-day strike and taders wanted the government to roll back its decision.
The Eknath Shinde-led coalition government has decided to bring back four policy decisions that had been taken by the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government during its tenure in 2015-2019. These include restoring voting rights of farmers to APMC markets, restarting pension to people jailed during Emergency.
Raman Jani (Patel), as chairman of the committee, had misused his position and appointed two new directors without holding elections. The other directors objected to these appointments and urged Jani to resign. Jani resigned on Sunday, before the proposed no-confidence motion.
