IMF Deputy Managing Director says india needs to work on labour markets and land. She cautioned against growing fragmentation globally, saying it hurt the global growth rate.
The IMF has asked emerging and developing economies to prudently use their dollar denominated foreign exchange reserves, allowing the exchange rate to adjust. A joint note by chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas and deputy Managing director Gita Gopinath said should intervene on a temporary basis.
Gita Gopinath is the first woman and second Indian to feature on the ‘wall of former chief economists’ of the International Monetary Fund. The first Indian to achieve the honour was Raghuram Rajan who was Chief Economist and Director of Research of IMF between 2003 and 2006.
India-born economist Gita Gopinath is the only woman to make it to the wall of former Chief Economists of the fund. The 50-year-old served as chief economist of the International Monetary Fund between 2019 and 2022. She was succeeded by Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas.
Gita Gopinath is the deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund. Earlier this year, she was the first woman chief economist at the IMF. She has now taken to Twitter to share an image of the wall that features all the Chief Economists of IMF. The image has managed to gather over 36K likes.
